Earth Day is here and it’s turning 55.

That’s over half a century of people coming together to celebrate and care for our one and only home: Earth.

This year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” and it’s a powerful reminder that the Earth doesn’t just belong to grown-ups. It belongs to all of us ~ kids, parents, teachers, communities ~ and each of us has the power to protect it.

But before we protect something, we have to know it. Even more than that - we have to feel it.

Because to protect, we must first connect.

That means spending time outside. Feeling the cool grass under bare feet, watching bees buzz past, letting the breeze tangle our hair and the soil stain our fingertips. When we touch and feel and explore nature, it stops being just “the environment.” It becomes our wild backyard, our secret treehouse, our quiet friend. A place to return to when the world feels too noisy. A place where we belong.

Imagine the sun shining brightly in the sky, its golden rays helping create clean electricity. Or wind turbines turning gracefully in the fields, powered by the same breeze that pushes the clouds. Even the waves in the sea can help light up homes. These are all forms of renewable energy - gentle, powerful gifts from nature that keep the planet alive and well.

But the strongest power?

It’s not the wind, or the sun, or the sea.

It’s us.

Every kind choice we make - whether it’s turning off the lights, picking up a piece of litter, planting a seed, or sharing what we’ve learned about Earth with someone else - we’re helping. We’re showing nature that it matters. And we’re building a future where the planet feels safe in our hands.

Caring for the Earth isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present - noticing the flowers that bloom beside the footpath, the birdsong in the early morning, the way the air smells after rain. These little connections build into something big. They help us grow into people who don’t just live on the Earth - but with it.

So this Earth Day, we invite you to step outside.

Listen, look, breathe. Let nature be your sanctuary. Let it fill your heart so full that you can’t help but want to care for it.

Because when we connect, we protect. 💚
